The Indian School of Mines, was started by Britishers in 1926 is located in Dhanbad. ISM is one of the leading technical institute of India. In ISM, students get admission through IIT-JEE which is supposed to be one of the toughest exams of world. The earth science branches such as mining, geology,geophysics, petroleum, mineral and environmental engineering are world famous. ISM also have other core engineering branches such as mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science, civil and chemical engineering which are also famous , having very good placement records. Birsa Institute of Technology was founded in 1949, and is a technical institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various branches of engineering wholly owned by the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of Jharkhand, Ranchi and affiliated to Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag.
